Derived from crushed rock, dolomite and lime are similar in that they will increase the pH of the soil (sweeten the soil) and supply calcium, but dolomite also contains magnesium. Magnesium is necessary for the plants to produce chlorophyll, that allows them to produce energy.

A sticky soil that builds up on the bottom of shoes can indicate an excess of magnesium and therefore dolomite will only worsen the problem. If the soil is sticky, lime or gypsum should be applied. Dolomite and lime also help to break down clay soils. If the soil pH is 6.5 or higher (neutral to alkaline), use gypsum to breakdown clay soils.
