BOGI Fair Competition Results 2010
The Competition and display of members home grown / home produced organic fare is a real motivating factor for visitors to join the club. People see the variety and quality of produce and want to learn more about how to get it happening in their backyard. The display is one of the centrepieces of the Fair and is a testament to organic gardening techniques – our lovely fresh backyard produce blows away any reservations about what one can expect from an organic garden. This year's competition was notable for the wide variety of items – we had to create twelve extra categories and even then, some categories were overflowing! So much silverbeet and kale and so many jars of jam and preserves – it was wonderful to see.
New categories included: Mulberries, Leeks, Turnips, Useful Plants and Protein-Legumes. Useful Plants included loofah, cinnamon and elderflower. Protein-Legumes had entries including pigeon pea and Madagascar bean. We also saw a larger number of tropical vegetables like yam – so next year we will add those to the list. If in doubt, please bring your produce along to the Fair next year – we'll take it all and find a place for it, even if it is not listed.
The most surprising aspect is that all of that lovely display came from the homes of just 50 people! So it is little wonder that with 58 categories, each with a first and second place, you will hear some names more than once on the winners roll call. On the date of the Fair, BOGI had over 500 members – imagine if even more of us could find the time to add to our club's once-a-year, larger-than-life advertisement for organics!
